Anonymity was revealed on the network

On the Internet, the data of 20 million users of free VPN services were found, among which there may be at least tens of thousands of Russians. The leak showed the insecurity of services that promise anonymity on the Internet, and can lead to both spam mailings and phishing and blackmail of users who decide to gain access to sites banned in the Russian Federation, experts say.

According to Ilya Shalenkov, the head of the cybersecurity services group at KPMG in Russia and the CIS, such applications are mainly used by people who are poorly versed in technical issues who need to access blocked sites or change their IP address for free in order, for example, to register several accounts in the game or wind up a vote. Free VPN solutions provide a minimum level of anonymity and security for network traffic, he said.
